Paradisus Playa del Carmen

“It’s a unique experience to be in an idyllic location like this,” Berasategui says. “Passion is more than just a gastronomic project; it’s a bunch of experiences under one roof. It’s a personal experience, and as cooks are happy, we in the kitchen transfer that happiness to the patrons.”

And the smile on peoples’ faces as they leave Passion makes it evident that Berasategui means what he says. Dinner rates for Passion by Martin Berasategui start at $40 pp for guests staying on property; guests who stay at least four nights in a Royal Service Suite, however, will receive one free dinner at Passion. Off-property guests of Passion can also enjoy dinner with rates starting at $90 pp.

getting active

After all of that eating, there’s only two things to do: sleep it off in the sun at one of the Bali beds or palapas surrounding the pools, or get up and get moving with one of the oh-so-many activities available.

Daily activities programs can be found in each guestroom, outlining the activities taking place each day for the week. Fit for all tastes, activities include health and wellness classes that run all day, such as yoga, Pilates or stretching each morning; volleyball and aqua gym in the early afternoons; salsa, merengue, Latin dance and bachata lessons in the late-afternoon and spinning classes in the evenings.

Add to that the life enrichment programs twice a day, like workshops teaching crafts, painting, photography, flowers and the art of massage; and makings and tastings covering Mexican wines, cocktails, tequila, sushi and fruit carving—your clients will be hard-pressed to find themselves with nothing to do.

a vacation while on vacation

But sometimes too much activity calls for a vacation of its own. Available to pamper all, YHI Spa is a sanctuary within a sanctuary. Within The 20,000-sq.-ft. spa incorporates traditional services, plus a state-of-the-art gym and full-service beauty salon.

The spa itself offers whirlpools, wet and dry saunas and steam rooms that are all complimentary, and a range of therapeutic treatments available for purchase, starting from $75 and including aromatherapy, thalassotherapy, hydrotherapy and Gaia Signature face and body therapy treatments. Body cocoon treatments and massages can be enjoyed in the 14 massage cabins, or experience one of two YHI Spa signature treatments: the Water Ritual, known to relieve anxiety, stress and fatigue, and the Exclusive Treatment Rice Delight, to provide moisturizing, softening, and elasticity-increasing components for the skin. The salon, meanwhile, offers full beauty services starting from $25, including manicures, pedicures, waxing, hair care such as coloring, cutting and styling, and makeup. And the fitness center offers studio classes and personal trainers to be sure those fitness-oriented guests never miss a beat.

It’s always difficult to pack up and head for home when you’ve been on any trip, but the staff at Paradisus Playa del Carmen really makes it hard—well, except for the ease of check-out and luggage porters, we mean. Even when you think your vacation is over, the service just doesn’t stop. For this editor, a quick chat with a resort employee days earlier about how incredible the spicy tuna rolls are at Bana resulted in a surprise to-go container, fresh from the kitchen, when it was time to head to the airport. Way to make a lasting memory!

getting there

About the area, the Mexico Tourism Board says Playa del Carmen is “one of the most charming spots in the Mexican Caribbean, located in the heart of the Mayan world, with an international flavor.” And now getting there is even easier with Aeromexico’s recent addition of daily nonstop flights between Miami and Cancun.
