• Txai Resort, the most deluxe resort pick of all, is an hour’s drive from Ilheus airport to Itacare, known for its secluded beaches and preserved Atlantic Rainforest. This ultra-luxe resort has 40 bungalows—some with private pools and outdoor massage tables—that are built on stilts and surrounded by wooden decks, all tucked into acres of coconut groves. The restaurant features Bahian cuisine, and the resort amenities include a living room, pool, TV room, Internet access, tennis court and spa, and excursions include eco-tours, rafting trips, canoeing and trail trekking. Doubles start at $485.

• Fazenda da Lagoa—reached by air to Ilheus, and then a 30-mile drive to the south with a short boat ride at the end of the road—lies along a 6-mile stretch of beach. The 14 deluxe guest bungalows are huge, with king-size beds, large decks, outside and inside showers, a beautiful pool and main lounge with library, and excellent restaurant. Activities include sea kayaking and surf lessons. Rates start at $350 per bungalow.
