Panoramic water views are the norm at CostaBaja, even from many of the citified, comfort-focused rooms if you’re lucky enough to get them. Just five minutes away by car from downtown La Paz (a shuttle runs from 8 a.m. to 9 p.m. daily to town, stopping at the hotel, the marina and the dock), this beachfront retreat has an inviting beach club with infinity pools melting into the sea beyond and a natural stone “theater” where outside movie screenings and concerts take place. The 115-room resort, a minute’s walk to the marina, is the hot place to stay these days thanks to inviting surroundings and its own signature restaurants. Steinbeck’s stands out here for its 400-bottle tequila collection and fish and steak options on a mesquite grill; order the shrimp bisque and thank us later.
Clients equating Baja California Sur with golf won’t be disappointed on this front, either. CostaBaja is home to Mexico’s first Gary Player Signature course, a beautiful 18-hole, 7,082-yard layout with a challenging 14th hole and views of the marina and the sea, complete with a driving range, full-service pro shop and onsite restaurant. Like the rest of CostaBaja, it’s been designed with a careful eye and respect toward its surroundings—one of the resort development’s buildings was built around a 500-plus-year-old cactus. That’s also why the resort’s full-service Espiritu Spa uses Baja’s indigenous flower in its signature treatment, the Damiana Spirit and Body Ritual, which combines a foot ablution with a full body massage. The tiny damiana flower is said to have antioxidant and harmonizing qualities.
The 3-night Unforgettable Summer package at CostaBaja is priced at $749 per couple for three nights and includes standard accommodations, daily breakfast buffet, a tour of Espiritu Santo island with lunch, daily transportation to downtown La Paz and taxes and tips. Room rates start at $149.
