Contributing writer Regina Baraban sat down with Xavier Ulloa Gispert, marketing director, Mexico Sandos Hotels & Resorts last week to talk about the Sandos brand, new initiatives at Sandos Cancun Lifestyle Resort, and big news for travel agents.
Regina Baraban (RB): What is the backstory of the Sandos brand?
Xavier Ulloa Gispert (XUG): Our first property opened in Spain 15 years ago, and now we have nine all-inclusive resorts—five in Spain and four in Mexico—all in spectacular beachfront locations. We offer vacations that focus on all of the senses, within the categories of beach, luxury, or eco, depending on the specific resort.
RB: Where are your Mexico Sandos resorts?
XUG: We have the Sandos Finisterra Los Cabos in Cabo San Lucas, the Sandos Playacar Beach Resort in Playa del Carmen, the Sandos Caracol Eco Resort in Riviera Maya, and the Sandos Cancun Lifestyle Resort in Cancun. Each has a different experience, but what they have in common is that they are all-inclusives on some of the most beautiful beaches in Mexico.
RB: Which Mexico resorts are most popular for weddings?
XUG: They all are! Every year we have more and more destination weddings at all of the properties, from simple eco weddings on the beach to dressy celebrations. Our beautiful oceanfront locations offer many types of wedding experiences.
RB: Tell us about the Sandos Cancun Lifestyle Resort, located in the heart of the hotel zone. What’s the customer demographic here?
XUG: Sandos Cancun is a boutique all-inclusive with a cosmopolitan flair. We appeal to sophisticated, young guests who come to Cancun for a beach vacation, shopping, and nightlife. Sixty percent of our guests are from the U.S., many from big cities like New York and Los Angeles. We’re also seeing more Canadian guests and Brazilians who visit Cancun for shopping.
RB: What differentiates Sandos Cancun from other all-inclusives nearby?
XUG: Being a boutique hotel (213 rooms) means that our guests are going to get special attention. We offer very personalized service. And last fall we introduced The Rhythm Experience, offering guests a unique opportunity to immerse themselves in a different music and entertainment experience every day of the week. Our millennial clientele are very into music, so we created something special for them. Every day, a featured DJ presents a different musical genre, from funky beats to fusion vibes. On Saturdays the Rhythm Experience expands into a longer event with rotating themes from masquerade to champagne.
RB: Is there any other news for travel agents?
XUG: Yes! Just a few months ago, we launched the Sandos Smart Agent portal specifically to help travel agents become brand experts.
