As so often happens, Tauck World Discovery is out and running ahead of the pack. Perhaps that is why the tour company is the Recommend Readers’ Choice Awards winner for Best Tour Operator, USA/Canada. Starting in 2011, Tauck is teaming up with the Emmy Award-winning filmmaker Ken Burns and his longtime collaborator Dayton Duncan to choreograph travel experiences based on themes from Burns’ films, including “The National Parks: America’s Best Idea,” “The Civil War” and “Jazz.”
The 5-year “Ken Burns American Journeys” partnership with Tauck will offer the first of two new “Crafted by Tauck & Ken Burns” land journeys, the 10-day Spirit of the Desert: The National Parks of the Southwest, operating May through October and priced for land from $4,390 pp dbl. According to Tauck CEO Dan Mahar, “The new itinerary goes beyond the parks’ incredible landscapes to explore the terrains’ deep spiritual significance in Native American culture. Along the way, guests will benefit from the participation of local experts who contributed to the Burns/Duncan ‘National Parks’ film.” The second journey will be a Civil War itinerary, visiting sites in the mid-Atlantic region and operating in September and October.”
Another part of the Tauck/Burns partnership features Ken Burns Events, which will be in-depth, single-departure travel experiences featuring a keynote address and other personal involvement from Burns. These 5-day events—Civil War (May 22-26 in Washington D.C.), and the Roots of Jazz (Oct. 5-9 in and around New Orleans) will accommodate 400 guests.
