Sweet Serenity in New York

While there’s no denying there’s a distinct energy in New York City—from the bright lights of Times Square, to the busy shops and boutiques in SoHo—they certainly don’t call it the “concrete jungle” for no reason. So for vacationers who want to couple a face-paced New York City experience with something that’s a bit more laid-back (yet still a stone’s throw away from all the action), we recommend a stay at the Buttermilk Falls Inn & Spa.

Situated on 75 acres along the Hudson River in Milton, New York, Buttermilk Falls Inn & Spa  is a full-service luxury resort that blends historic charm—the main building dates back to 1764—with modern amenities including 17 distinctly decorated accommodations featuring plush bedding, flat-screen TVs, electric fireplaces and whirlpool tubs. There’s also  a 6-treatment room spa with enclosed pool and a fitness center.

The property’s 10-acre working farm, home to an orchard, vegetable and herb garden, as well as plenty of chickens, goats, llamas and even peacocks, is the source of organic produce and eggs used at the onsite Henry’s Farm to Table Restaurant. Open for brunch, lunch and dinner, the menu at Henry’s  changes daily depending on the available produce at the farm. Some menu offerings include dishes like spinach and goat cheese salad with shaved fennel and raspberries, Maryland crab cakes, grass-fed strip steak, pan-seared scallops and pan-seared duck with coconut sweet potatoes. Guests can even try their hand at a cooking class, held at the restaurant on most days of the week.

At the spa, meanwhile, guests can enjoy an array of indulgent treatments, which include massages and reflexology, as well as organic facials and body treatments. The spa’s signature Soil to Spa treatments even incorporate herbs and fruits from the farm. The spa also practices sustainable tourism, as the sauna, steam room and pool are powered by solar and geo thermal energy.

Beyond the property’s borders guests can  enjoy hiking on the Rail Trail and nearby scenic parks, as well as boating on the Hudson. There are also several boutiques, art galleries and wineries nearby. The property’s front desk staff can make arrangements for such activities as golf, fly fishing and kayaking, as well. And with the Inn located just 70 miles from the city, guests still have the option to plan a day trip to enjoy all the big city attractions during their visit.

Rates at Buttermilk Inn & Spa start at $250 per night, including a farm fresh breakfast and afternoon tea, as well as access to the gym and the spa’s pool, saunas and steam rooms. For more information, visit buttermilkfallsinn.com.
