four seasons resort hualalai at historic ka’upulehu
The Property: If luxury were looking to up her own ante, she’d find what she was looking for at the oceanfront Four Seasons Resort Hualalai at Historic Ka’upulehu, with 2-story bungalows housing 243 guestrooms and suites. In this exclusive setting on the Big Island’s Kona-Kohala Coast, lush greenery spills out over white-sand beaches that stretch out for miles and are gently caressed by cerulean waters.
The Greens: The 18-hole, par 72 Jack Nicklaus signature Hualalai Golf Course— host of the annual PGA Champions Tour—winds over 7,100 yards, flowing across brilliant-green fairways and set against black lava and the ocean. Hole 1 borders a jet-black lava flow and hole 17 is enveloped by the shoreline, so when the tide is high, golfers get the distraction of crashing surf.
The Amenities: Let’s start with the pools, because there are several, including the King’s Pond, a 1.8-million gallon “aquarium” carved out of natural lava rock and home to over 3,000 tropical fish. The spa is another gift from the islands’ gods, with an open-air Waiea, or Water of Life, garden. And although the dining at the three restaurants and two oceanside lounges is divine, it’s the onsite Cultural Center that’s the centerpiece here with activities that highlight the traditions of old Hawaii.
The Scene: Small surprises for children are the norm (think treasure hunts and marshmallow toasting on the beach), and there’s an onsite 24-ft. climbing wall, not to mention a “backyard beyond the beach” made for exploring: a volcano national park, lush valleys and magnificent falls. This coast is also known to be tops for sportfishing—“catch of the day,” the blue marlin.
The Rates:The Unlimited Golf package includes daily golf for two, including access to the driving range and a shared cart; daily buffet breakfast for two; and accommodations; prices vary.

silverado resort & spa
The Property: Located in the heart of Napa Valley, the 415-room Silverado Resort & Spa, a Dolce Resort, spreads out over 1,200 acres. The heart of the resort is its plantation-style mansion built in the 1870s by a Civil War general. Guests can expect cozy, home-style accommodations that open to a patio or balcony and come with wood-burning fireplaces and golf course views.
The Greens: Originally designed by Robert Trent Jones, Jr. and redesigned by PGA Hall of Famer Johnny Miller in 2010, both 18-hole onsite courses—North and South—feature dozens of water crossings, elevation changes and routing through historic oak trees. The North course runs for 7,100 yards, while the South course runs for 6,685 yards. And golfers will be playing on hallowed grounds indeed, as the courses have hosted a number of professional tournaments.
