Aeromexico continues to cast a wide net for travelers across two continents, with no end in sight. On May 21, it will add one more U.S.-Mexico route to its impressive roster with a daily direct flight between Washington, D.C.’s Dulles International Airport and Mexico City.
According to Aeromexico’s v.p. of corporate sales Jorge Goytortua, there are several factors that led to the opening of this new service: “The union of the two most important capitals in the Americas. The growing and continuous economic and business development between the two countries. The economic, social and cultural relationship between both nations is also very important, and it’s also part of the growth that Grupo Aeromexico has had in the markets of the Americas.”
Indeed, there are more routes opening up for the airline this summer. In July, the airline will begin a flight from Mexico City to Atlanta and from New York City to Cancun. On May 7, the airline celebrated its first flight from Mexico City to Chetumal and from Mexico City to El Salvador. This, says Goytortua, will be followed by more flights within Mexico, including to Manzanillo and Saltillo. In addition, Aeromexico recently signed a code-share agreement with TAM Airlines to operate flights between Mexico City and Sao Paulo, as well as connections to domestic destinations in both Brazil and Mexico.
Last year, Aeromexico saw tremendous growth in both its domestic and international markets, with a 42 percent increase in the latter over 2010. As the airline continues to expand, one has to wonder how it’s doing so well when so many others are struggling. “With a consistent and sustained business plan, adapting to the needs of the markets and of travelers, always offering distinguished service—I think that’s the key,” says the executive. “We consider ourselves, first, an airline that offers a great network of connectivity—which is part of what we’re seeking with this flight between Washington, D.C., and Mexico City, because it’s not just transporting passengers between the two cities but also offering a connection to basically all cities in Mexico.
“We serve 40 cities within the Mexican Republic, 10 countries in Central and South America and have a vast network in the U.S. as well,” he adds. “So with Aeromexico, passengers have this great connectivity, this distinguished service—service where for years we have concerned ourselves with giving passengers what they value. A service with punctuality, with quality, with food and beverages on board our flights. That’s what sets us apart, and that commitment exists in our investors and all the way to our board of directors—to develop a great airline that represents Mexico in the distinguished way that we believe we do.”
It seems that nothing—not even news about Mexico’s drug-related violence—have managed to slow down the airline. “We have a sustained business plan—14 million passengers flew with us last year. I think that speaks for itself. The Mexican market is a growing market for air travel and we’re focused on what we do: developing markets, exploring new routes and opportunities, and generating passenger traffic that helps develop our country from an economic and a tourist standpoint.”
