Bush and Outback—Downunder Style

To Australians, anywhere away from the major urban centers is designated “bush” or “outback” (the latter being more remote), and South Australia has it all. Perhaps most known for being the “jumping off” point for visiting the wildlife wilderness of Kangaroo Island, the state of South Australia offers much more than that.

Indulge in the Wineries
Australia’s wine capital, the Barossa Valley, features more than 80 cellar doors, less than a 2-hour drive from Adelaide. It is a great romantic escape; the leafy hills and valleys have inspired many local artists, so take some time to explore one of the world’s top wine tourism destinations that is rich in history, culture and spectacular food and wine.

Flinders Ranges and Outback
The Flinders Ranges is one of the oldest landscapes on earth and it’s only a 5-hour drive from Adelaide. Spectacular in every sense, this is a land of steep ridges and peaks, narrow tree-lined gorges, bone-dry creeks and rust red soil. There’s also the incredible magnificence of Wilpena Pound, a natural amphitheater. Aboriginal legends thousands of years old tell of ancient dreamtime serpents and giants shaping these lands.

In the outback, the locals wait for the twice-weekly delivery of mail and goods from the outside world, brought by a postman and the few lucky tourists accompanying them.

And Coober Pedy, famed for its Opal Mining, is an experience in itself, where people live in underground houses and fossick for opals on a virtual moonscape. This is where your clients will find the essence of Australia.

Adelaide City—Australia’s Most Livable City
The city-center, surrounded by parklands, is a blend of historic buildings, wide streets, parklands, cafes and restaurants. Adelaide is easy to get around, with rolling hills to the east and beaches to the west. In addition, the city has a diverse cultural mix that guarantees the food is sensational.

Kangaroo Island—The Wildlife Island
Thanks to its huge size and low population (just 4,500 people on an island the size of Long Island, NY), Kangaroo Island is where native Australian wildlife has thrived in the wild. Over two-thirds of the landmass is national park or wildlife reserves, and most importantly, the island is free of mainland pest species like rabbits and foxes.

As a result, this is where it’s quite easy to see all those famous Australian animals in their natural habitats. Kangaroo Island is home to kangaroos, wallabies, koalas, echidnas, duck-billed platypus and heath goannas.
