El Secreto…Shh, We Want to Keep it Our Little Secret

El Secreto on Ambergris Caye.

Although we would indeed love to keep it a secret, we have a distinct feeling that the new resort that’s about to open on Ambergris Caye in Belize, El Secreto, will not be a secret for very long, if at all.

As the owners, Abraham Roffe and Abraham Saade, themselves explain it, “This is barefoot luxury with top-notch service,” and they stress the service bit because both Roffe and Saade, who are Mexican-born and have been traveling to Belize for as long as they can remember, agree that although the caye is truly mesmerizing and a scuba divers’ paradise, “nothing in the area served the needs of the affluent adult traveler.” Enter the South Pacific-inspired El Secreto, which, Roffe and Saade say enthusiastically, will offer all the pampering and indulgences the discerning traveler could ever need or want.

Tucked away in its own private island beachfront enclave, 11 miles north of San Pedro Town, El Secreto, which is set to open on Oct. 1, will offer thatched-roof villa types based on their location throughout the property: the three Sea Villas are oceanfront; the four Tropical Villas offer lush garden views; the five Lake Villas surround the resort’s salt water lake; and for the ultimate in pampering, there’s the IKAL Spa Villa. Interior and exterior villa finishes include king-size bed, flat-screen LCD TVs, marble bathrooms, indoor hot tub, private outdoor jacuzzi with enclosed outdoor shower, outdoor deck with hammock, as well as complimentary WiFi and a pillow menu. For those booking the IKAL Spa Villa, added enhancements include a private double massage cabin, steam room, indoor/outdoor jacuzzi, and a freshwater pool.

Guests can expect indulgent amenities such as 5-minute power massages poolside; specially prepared drinks made to order from hand-picked coconuts; regionally inspired cuisine using ingredients grown at the resort’s own vegetable and herb gardens; the option for beachside massages; and a slew of complimentary perks such as breakfast, yoga and meditation sessions on the resort’s private pier, bicycle rentals and access to non-motorized watersports including sailing and kayaking. Another delight that starts the journey to paradise off on the right foot is the arrival to the resort itself. Guests reach the resort from San Pedro Town via boat, the area’s primary form of transportation, and once there there’s none of that traditional check-in process. Rather, guests step onto the white sand beach and are escorted directly to their villa.

Onsite activities include everything from scuba diving—Blue Hole is two hours away—snorkeling, and parasailing, to cave tubing, and birdwatching, as well as helicopter and jungle excursions, not to mention a must for cultural aficionados, the option to take a Mayan Civilization tour.

El Secreto is offering a 4-night Grand Opening package with rates starting at $1,670 for Tropical Villa accommodations. The package includes “Meet and Greet” at San Pedro Town airstrip; transfer by boat to and from El Secreto; welcome cocktail and chilled scented towel upon arrival; full American breakfast served at El Secreto restaurant; dinner at El Secreto restaurant with choice of appetizer, entree and dessert (alcoholic beverages not included); one IKAL Spa signature treatment; and a Hol-Chan Marine Reserve excursion. The package is also available for Sea Villa accommodations at $1,999, and Lake Villa accommodations at $1,850. Taxes and service charges are included. The package is available for booking through Sept. 30, 2012 for travel between Oct. 1, 2012 and Nov. 16, 2012. Restrictions and blackout dates may apply.
