After last year’s announcement to build a tram to the ruins of Choquequirao, the government of Peru has announced plans for a second tram headed to the ancient Chachapoyas fortress of Kuelap. The new cable car is expected to accommodate up to 1,000 visitors to Kuelap every hour.

That said, travelers can still visit the untouched area before the tram arrives with Adventure Life’s 9-day Chachapoyas Discovery trip that explores Chiclayo, the Tucume Pyramids, and the Sipan Ruins before visiting the lost civilization of Chachapoyas. The trip also visits the mountaintop temple and fortress of Kuelap; the Leimebamba museum, which houses a collection of 200 mummies; and the Revash tombs. Adventurous travelers can opt for a hike to Gocta Falls, the world’s tallest free-falling waterfall. Rates start at $2,195 pp. A 12-day trip, Adventure Life’s Chocququirao Treck, is also available visiting Lima and Cusco; it includes five days of hiking and camping from Choquequirao, and a visit to Machu Picchu. Rates start at $3,450 pp. For more information, visit
