Expansion News There’s a simple formula for RIU’s growth: Riu himself chooses each new destination. First comes the most basic RIU category in a new destination; if it’s successful, they then bring higher categories of hotels into the chosen location if they think the market is there. “The destination is what makes you decide whether to focus on one market or another,” explains Riu. A similar concept applies when choosing another country in which to lay ground. The company, he says, gets a “feel” for the country and how its offerings may contribute to a visitor’s experience.

The next Mexican city to welcome RIU is Mazatlan. The 14-story beachfront Hotel RIU Emerald Bay is set to open in May with 716 rooms. If guests come, Mazatlan may just see a RIU Palace in its future as well. The next RIU destination in Mexico? Nobody knows for sure, although Huatulco is a distinct possibility. “You have to imagine what the guests will like,” says Riu. After all, he adds, everyone needs to go on holiday from time to time.

Every year, RIU invests around $45 million in maintaining and renovating its existing hotels, and 2008 was no different. In Playa del Carmen, the 664-room RIU Tequila is celebrating its 10th anniversary by unveiling extensive renovations that cost more than $15 million. Its guests can also enjoy certain entertainment and food & beverage privileges at nearby hotels RIU Lupita, RIU Playacar and RIU Yucatan.

RIU recently revamped its online booking system so agents can make reservations in real time at any of its hotels. Additionally, it has added an XML integration platform so agencies’ sales systems can connect directly with RIU’s available stock. The company’s devotion to agents includes its PartnerClub, which allows you comprehensive information on all its products. The program features a Partner Service Guarantee, which helps solve potential issues your clients may have with their stay within 24 hours and welcomes them with special perks unveiled at check-in.
