The beach cottages might be the choice for honeymooners who want to feel slightly removed from the crowd. The 42 beachfront cottages all have lanais facing the ocean, each guaranteed a prime oceanfront view. Dressed with tropical yellow walls, the polished walnut floors lead to a large, multi-level beach retreat with 15-ft. ceilings and king poster beds. The cottages are equipped with large marble bathrooms and Kallista deep-soak tubs for two as well as freestanding glass showers. Published rates run $449 per night whereas an oceanfront deluxe queen room will run $255.

Turtle Bay Resort has a North Shore Romance package that comes with buffet breakfast daily, sparkling wine with “tuxedo” strawberries, nightly turndown service, and a Hertz convertible. A 2-night minimum stay is required. Rates start at $502 per night. With beach cottage accommodations the package adds Hawaiian-style afternoon tea service and use of the cottage concierge services for rates starting at $765 per night.

the big island For honeymoons heading to the Big Island, The Fairmont Orchid on the Kahalo Coast is well worth considering. The property is only 19 miles from Kona Airport and is in a development that provides complimentary shuttles to other hotels and high-end mall shopping.

The property opened in 1990 as a 540-room luxury resort built on a rolling 32-acre beachfront, with a full-service spa, a 10,000-sq.-ft. pool, championship tennis courts and golf right next to the resort. Renovated in 2006, the spa became the enhanced Spa Without Walls—a meandering garden of rainforest plants, waterfalls and private hales near the pool and beach. Rooms remain fairly conservative in Fairmont style, with ocean, golf course and pool views. Several suite options open onto the ocean with private lanais and expansive views. Couples can easily upgrade to Fairmont Gold service, depending on availability. The lounge serves upper floor accommodations with continuous attention to meals, snacks and hors d’oeuvres. All rooms come with certain amenities, including bathrobes and slippers, complimentary bottles of Hawaiian Springs water replenished daily, three telephones, two with speaker phones, and a coffee maker.

A recommended room choice is the oceanfront suite. One-bedroom oceanfront suites offer spectacular panoramic views of the Pacific Ocean from the bedroom, living room and both private lanais. The suite has a parlor that is separated from the bedroom by classic French doors. These suites are available on every floor and bring 1,477 sq. ft. of easy living space. The average room rate at the property is $449. Oceanfront suites bring published rates of $1,799 per night plus taxes and fees.

A Make Room for Romance amenity can be added to any room rate for $125. Orchid petals will be trailed from the guestroom door to the bed. They will be arranged on the bed directly on the top sheet in the shape of a heart. Slippers, and slipper mats will be positioned on the floor by the bed and bathrobes will be positioned on the bed. A selection of bath crystals and bath gels will be placed on the edge of the bathtub and floating candles will illuminate the bathroom. A CD player is fixed with mood music, a bottle of tropical massage lotion sits on the nightstand, a bottle of champagne will be chilling in an ice bucket with two glasses nearby, and a selection of chocolate-dipped Big Island exotic fruit will be beckoning from the table.

For a starting rate of $599 per night, a 5-night Mana (Power) of the Big Island romance package includes oceanview accommodations, two Fun & Sun value cards, one couples’ massage, breakfast daily, a romantic turndown for one evening, complete with strewn orchid petals and iced champagne, daily cabana rental and a 1-time resort credit of $200.
