Ponant is breaking the ice in the world of polar expedition cruises with the announcement of its recently ordered ship: an electric hybrid cruise icebreaker propelled by Liquefied Natural Gas.

Ponant appointed VARD, FINCANTIERI’s Norwegian subsidiary, to build the ship, which will be the first of its kind in the cruising industry. The Ponant Icebreaker, as the ship has been named, is scheduled for delivery in 2021.

The 135-stateroom Ponant Icebreaker is environmentally friendly, as well as “Clean Ship” certified, and will take passengers to never-explored Polar destinations such as the true geographic North Pole, the Weddell Sea, the Ross Sea, and Peter I Island.
