Sandals South Coast is an excellent choice for couples who want the surety of a known all-inclusive brand and also desire the romantic serenity of a resort that’s well off the beaten tourist path. Located in the sleepy coastal community of White House in Jamaica’s Westmoreland Parish (formerly the Sandals Whitehouse), the property has 372 rooms in a trio of 3-story buildings arrayed before an inverted crescent of effectively private white-sand beach.

Twenty categories of rooms are distributed among the French Village, Dutch Village, and Italian Village buildings—with the second-floor Beachfront Deluxe rooms in the French Village being the entry level.

The French Village, which surrounds a pool with a swim-up bar and has setups for a poolside DJ and water volleyball, offers the liveliest party scene, whereas the Italian Village is closest to the resort’s restaurants, shops, lobby, and conference center. The Dutch Village sits in the middle and is the quietest of the three; it’s also close to the premium Club Sandals lounge, open 24/7.

A dozen overwater bungalows sit at the end of a long pier at the western end of the property. The higher-end, butler-served rooms—which include both penthouse units and beach-facing walkout suites—are mainly found in the Dutch and Italian Villages; the walkouts and other beachfront rooms at the French Village are similar, but don’t include butlers.

Sandals South Coast isn’t the only Sandals resort in Jamaica with overwater accommodations—they are a high-demand feature at Sandals Royal Caribbean in Montego Bay as well—but the dozen South Coast villas (officially Over-the-Water Butler Honeymoon Bungalows) are more private and serene than their MoBay counterparts. One of the very nice things about Sandals South Coast is that it’s the only development on its 2-mile stretch of beachfront, and the bungalows occupy the quietest section of all, removed just far enough from the main resort but still within easy walking distance of the (also overwater) Latitudes bar and the open-air Schooners restaurant.

Like the rest of the resort, the bungalows benefit from the resort’s remote location (South Coast is about a 1.5-hour drive from Sangster International Airport in Montego Bay). Sunsets at Latitudes are a daily ritual for many resort guests, who gather at the circular bar or settle into the hammocks on the deck with drinks in hand to toast the day’s end.

Sandals South Coast, like all Sandals resorts, offers a diverse array of amenities as part of its Luxury Included package, including meals and drinks (Red Stripe beer and Appleton Estate rum are featured) at the resort’s seven bars and nine restaurants, and non-motorized watersports. On land, the outdoor lighted tennis and pickle ball courts tend to get the most play early in the morning or in the evening, when complimentary group lessons are offered. The standalone Red Lane Spa is excellent, with skilled practitioners delivering services in treatment rooms surrounding a quiet courtyard with a soothing plunge pool.

The beach volleyball court near the Italian Village is in near-constant use all day and is conveniently close to the swim-up bar at the main pool and the Jerk Shack, the resort’s most authentic—and arguably best—restaurant. Other favorites include the surf and turf options at Schooners, the outstanding sushi and rolls at Sushi on the Sand, and the crepes at Cafe de Paris.

The Sandals-owned Island Routes does a weekly catamaran cruise to the floating Pelican Bar that’s highly recommended—it’s a welcome taste of local culture and one of several local excursions offered through the tour desk or arranged by the concierge. The talented South Coast entertainment crew puts on lively shows in the cabaret theater, including fire dancers, a spot-on Michael Jackson impersonator, and a relatively tame burlesque show.
