Golf with a Side of Luxury

Question: What do you get when you take one of the poshest destinations – Bermuda – and add the highest percentage of golf courses per landmass in the world?

southampton parish The property: The Fairmont Southampton, a golf institution in Bermuda, feels as if it’s existed on the island since its earliest days of tourism—in a good way. Its 593 guestrooms combine a tropical color palette with a country aesthetic, from bedrooms with plush armchairs and 2-poster beds, to airy balconies. Upgrading to a suite more than doubles the amount of space in standard guestrooms, adding a second balcony, a second minibar, walk-in closets and marble bathrooms. Both guestrooms and suites can be further upgraded to Fairmont Gold status, enjoying a location on the sixth floor of the resort, plus private check-in and access to its Fairmont Gold lounge, serving breakfast each morning and drinks and snacks throughout the day.

The greens: The Fairmont’s own golf course, an 18-hole, par 3 course, sits at one of the highest points on the island. That’s still a relatively low altitude on this flat archipelago, but the slight lift means increased winds blowing in from the Atlantic, foiling even veteran golfers’ best attempts. Happily, players have scenic sights like the sea and the Gibbs Hill Lighthouse to soothe their egos. Guests of the Fairmont may also play at Bermuda’s Port Royal Golf Course, which re-opened last summer after a $14 million renovation. Many now consider it the best course on the island, thanks to its water views from nearly every hole. Fairmont guests may also opt for a round at Riddell’s Bay Golf and Country Club, an older course that still presents a challenge for players, thanks to designer Devereux Emmett’s tiny greens and tight fairways; and at Belmont Hills Golf & Country Club.

The amenities: The Fairmont Southampton has long been Bermuda’s most high-profile, most upscale resort, and its amenities are a big part of the reason why. Boasting panoramic views to the sea from Bermuda’s highest point, the resort offers guests a long list of ways to relax. Its Willow Stream Spa, measuring 31,000 sq. ft., boasts an indoor heated pool adorned with waterfalls and tropical gardens, plus 15 treatment rooms and three lounges. The Newport Room serves up French cuisine in five-star style, with decor designed to look like the vast, fancy dining hall on an exclusive private yacht. The aptly named Ocean Club offers fresh seafood with an ocean view, while the Bacci Italian restaurant has homemade pasta dishes on offer.

The scene: As posh as its name implies, Southampton Parish is home to some of Bermuda’s best dining, and not just at The Fairmont. At Greg’s Steakhouse, clients can watch chefs prepare their meals on an open flame, right before their eyes. Whaler Inn offers the widest range of fresh-caught seafood in the area, and the Lighthouse Tea Room, located in the former home of the lighthouse keeper at the base of the historic Gibbs Hill Lighthouse, combines island history and classic Bermudian and British cuisine. From that oldest cast-iron lighthouse in the world, clients can continue on a tour of attractions including St. Ann’s Church, dating to 1717; and the Great Sound, an enormous natural harbor. At Queen’s View, clients can look out over the Sound for a spectacular panoramic view of the sea.

The rates: Fairmont’s Golf Around Getaway includes a 3-night stay at either the Fairmont Southampton or its sister property in Hamilton Parish, the Fairmont Hamilton Princess; daily breakfast; and one round of golf at each: the Port Royal Golf Course, Riddell’s Bay Golf and Country Club, and Belmont Hills Golf Course. Rates start at $599 pp at both properties. Greens fees at the Fairmont Southampton’s own golf course start at $59 for 18 holes.
